The Thallus Chair, a creation by Torres Chen, epitomizes the fusion of technology, aesthetics, and sustainability. Fabricated through a collaboration between Torres Chen and Wei Gong, co-founders of ARM Robotics, the chair represents a significant advancement in furniture design.

Beginning as a research project, the venture utilized algorithms to refine its curves and optimize performance. The utilization of a KUKA KR270 industrial robotic arm and a custom pellet extruder allowed for precise layer-by-layer printing, pushing the boundaries of robotic 3D printing technology. Through meticulous testing and parameter adjustments, including extrusion amounts and robot speed, the team achieved a balance between efficiency and precision, paving the way for future large-scale and complex projects.

The Thallus Chair’s 12-hour constant printing process with a 10-millimeter thickness showcased the potential of this innovative manufacturing technique. It offers unrivaled customization possibilities and highlights the transformative power of additive manufacturing in bespoke furniture production.

The final product’s slender curves not only support weight but also exude natural beauty, reminiscent of organic growth patterns. This blend of computational design and state-of-the-art robotic 3D printing signifies a meaningful exploration into the future of furniture design and fabrication.
